New threat to phones
Article Abstract:
Norweb Communications has developed data transmission technology which allows power lines to be used by electricity supplies for data transmission. This technology offers faster speeds than modems and provides an alternative to phone lines, threatening British Telecommunications' monopoly. A pilot project is being carried out in north west England in 1998 and expansion is planned into mainland Europe and Asia. The patents are jointly owned by Nortel and Norweb.
