Observers see gain in Plains' emphasis on oil
Article Abstract:
The certain drop in 1992 profits of Plains Petroleum Co will force the company out of Forbes' list of '200 Best Small Companies' after making it in 1991. The 1992 1st qtr results in Mar showed a 62% decline in profits from $6.4 million (66 cents a share) to $2.4 million (25 cents). Analysts who have been following the Colorado-based company were not surprised by its poor showing, attributing the downturn to low investor enthusiasm, confusion with another company named Plains Resources Inc, poor results of 1991 capital spending and unproductive exploratory drilling efforts. Company focus on oil in 1992 should turn around the company and raise its stock value.

Murphy Oil Corp
Article Abstract:
Murphy Oil Corp's Mar qtr profits dropped from $25.8 million to $3 million due largely to the global decline in crude oil prices, the weakened price environment for natural gas and higher exploration expenses. Moreover, refining and marketing profits also slumped from $20 million to $750,000. Only a $1.6 million UK and European contribution kept the company from moving into the loss column. The rest of the company's figures also indicated substantial declines.
