Offense catching up with defense
Article Abstract:
The two-phase Joint Countermine Advanced Concept Technology Demonstrations is aimed at evaluating the potential of emerging technologies to provide capability for the smooth transition of countermine operations from sea to land. The testing approach combines three elements: data analysis and observation of live systems; structured collection of warfighters' impressions; and, modeling and simulation. In the first phase, four reconnaissance systems, including Littoral Remote Sensing and Magic Lantern, and five breaching/clearing systems, including Clausen Power Blade and Joint Amphibious Mine Countermeasures, were assessed. In the second phase, staff planning process will be used to fit the new system into the existing systems of systems.

Gender integration: what's next?
Article Abstract:
The Navy has made considerable strides in the matter of integrating women into the service. However, concerns of government officials over incidents of sexual harassment at several military training schools have led to a critical scrutiny of Navy practices regarding the integration of basic training. The Navy can allay these concerns by ensuring that only its best personnel train recruits, as these trainors can create ways to physically challenge both men and women in an integrated environment. After all, if Navy men and women are expected to fight together in time of war, they must then continue to train together.

Navy Global 2000: one JAG's perspective
Article Abstract:
The Navy's annual global war military exercise was conducted in Newport, RI, from Aug 14, 2000-Aug 25, 2000. The Navy Global 2000 brought together many brilliant operational experts from the active duty, reserve, retired and civilian sectors. These individuals confronted serious issues of national security and resolved them skillfully. Yet many of these people appear to have collectively harbored a misunderstanding of international law in certain areas.
