Old guard ventures into cyberspace banking

First Direct, Woolwich and Halifax are investing in Internet banking. First Direct is launching a live banking website in Nov 1999, and has already launched an Internet portal. Woolwich is investing 125 million pounds sterling in its Open Plan Services project, and is aiming for 2 million customers by year-end 2002. Halifax plans to invest 100 million pounds sterling in its Greenfield.co website over three years. Mortgage lending accounts for 65% of Halifax's business, so it can move into non-core activities.
