Operationalizing strategic planning
Article Abstract:
A study of multi-year data, structured and informal interviews with chief executives, and 30 focus groups of commercial and industrial executives was conducted to contrast the reality of corporate strategic planning with that of cases taught in business schools. The benefits of strategic planning are not realized until the process is integrated thoroughly with operations. In business school literature, strategic planning is a dynamic process in which companies identify their future opportunities in an interactive planning cycle. In reality, strategic planning is rarely a viable process and improvement is difficult due to a lack of corporate commitment. Many companies are not positioning themselves advantageously for the long-term because of a failure to integrate strategic planning with operations.
