Advocating Advocacy Advertising
Article Abstract:
The FCC's Fairness Doctrine is under attack. Advertisers may present advertorials in print, but not on airwaves. The American Advertising Federation (AAF) is supporting a Senate bill that would permit advertorials, product and service commercials previously banned under the Fairness Doctrine. As the Doctrine currently exists, certain interpretations are unclear. When an advertiser presents one view of a conflict, this is considered illegal under the doctrine. The Supreme Court is showing signs of dissatisfaction over its supportive ruling on the constitutionality of the Fairness Doctrine in Red Lion Broadcasting vs FCC.

Advertising in Black and White
Article Abstract:
Marketers should advertise to the black market. Consumer groups have different preferences that need to be targeted in an advertising campaign. Advertising aimed at a white consumer group might not appeal to the black consumer. The black market should be tapped by marketers because blacks are strong consumer spenders. Blacks have disposable income and are shown to exercise brand loyalty. Marketing research will reveal the needs of the black target market, and the marketer's sales will increase with advertising addressing these needs.
