Out of work and into good hands
Article Abstract:
The UK recession is leading to an increase in the number of redundancies. Corporations can achieve benefits from retaining the services of an outplacement counseling firm to help redundant employees with their career plans. The use of outplacement counseling firms to help redundant employees benefits firms in many ways: it preserves the reputation of the firm, which is under question due to the need to layoff employees; it psychologically reassures retained employees; and it encourages prospective employees. Outplacement counseling services are not employment agencies, but typically help redundant employees build up their job search skills for finding new employment.

A shot in the arm for pensions advisers?
Article Abstract:
The changes in pension laws contained in the 1987 British Budget contain some anomalies that ought to be corrected by the government, but it provides a number of pension planning opportunities. Under the new pension regime, executives who receive promotions may end up receiving smaller pensions and smaller lump sums on retirement than they would have received for a lower position. Under the new rules, it may be possible to maximize the tax-free lump sum given to employees upon retirement by making a small change in the pension provided.
