Over there and overjoyed
Article Abstract:
Companies that need to expatriate employees for overseas jobs should carefully recruit individuals for such assignments to avoid costly failures. They should ensure that the persons chosen for the work abroad are personally suited to the job in terms of their technical capability and mental preparedness. Multinationals should consider the use of psychological or personality tests to ensure that candidates can adapt to their new environment. They should also check if the spouses and children of these potential recruits are willing and able to relocate to foreign countries. Some companies conduct work sample tests, where candidates are assigned to a destination on a short-term contract at a lower level, to see if they can function effectively in the foreign location. The company policy should include vital support such as training and provision for the family.

The untouchables of Svinia
Article Abstract:
The economic and social problems confronting gypsies or Romas in the Slovakian village of Svinia have been studied. The village is home to 500 Romas who live in a hectare of swampy land without running water, toilets, sewers, garbage disposal and heating facilities. Two wells in the settlement have been polluted by oil while 10-year olds sniff solvents by the creek. The Romas also have no full-time occupations and are also beset by illiteracy and health problems. The Svinia Project was established as a community development plan to help the Romas and employs two full-time field workers.
