Public relations firms manipulate public opinions and pose a threat to democracy in the US, according to the book 'Trust Us, We're Experts.' Expected to be available in bookstores on Jan 2, 2001, the book was co- authored by Sheldon Rampton and John Stauber. The authors investigate the activities of large PR firms that include Burson-Marsteller and Porter Novelli. Rampton and Stauber, who manage the Madison, WI-based Center for Media and Democracy, plan to promote their book in New York, NY, Chicago, IL, Washington, DC, San Francisco and Los Angeles, CA.

Independent PR firms registered banner year
Article Abstract:
Independent public relations firms participating in the O'Dwyer Co's rankings reported double-digit increase in net fee income in 2000 and 16 of the top 25 gained 25% or more. Seven of the ten largest agencies recorded growth of over 25%, with the biggest gain, 108%, posted by the PR 21 unit of Edelman PR Worldwide. Edelman, the No 1 independent by a big margin, reported a 25.5% rise to $233.4 million, followed by Ruder Finn, which had 41.6% increase to $84.1 million.
