Pensions innovation deserves applause

This type of pension plan offers advantages such as a range of investment options and a choice over whether to invest monthly or with a lump sum. These schemes also offer low dealing and administration costs. Investment trusts offer good value due to discounts available in Oct 1996, and they tend to outperform pension funds. Investors with some time to retirement can seek capital growth in emerging economies and those nearer retirement can seek safer trusts.

Guaranteed, but not for long
Article Abstract:
Guaranteed funds may not be secure if they use derivatives and a counterparty defaults. The United Kingdom Securities and Investments Board (Sib) has issued draft regulations on guarantees and argues that funds dependent on derivatives to supply a guarantee cannot label themselves as 'guaranteed' though they can use another term such as 'protected' which has a less absolute meaning. Investors should benefit from greater clarity but they should still read details of the funds they are considering.
