Pensions - more than a question of timing
Article Abstract:
Interest rate changes can have a major impact on the size of annuities that pensioners have to live on. Interest rates will be affected by the decision for the United Kingdom to join European monetary union (Emu) or stay out of this project. Yields of government securities may have dropped because the UK is seen as likely to join Emu. It is difficult to assess interest rate movements given the number of factors involved and the difficulty of predicting how they will change. Personal factors may be more important than forecasts for interest rates.

The name's bond... with-profits bond
Article Abstract:
With-profit bond policies are one of the products that life insurers offer to investors and which give them a safe way to invest in the stock market. Typically, an investor pays in a regular amount to a chosen insurer, which pools the premium with that of other customers and invests it in a with-profit fund. Each year a bonus is paid to the investor, depending on the performance of the fund. Most with-profit funds are invested in UK equities, although some funds are exposed to investments such as property and gilts.
