Pergamon contributes to a brand new controversy
Article Abstract:
The issues of valuation and disclosure in the accounting treatment of brands, including the brand name of a business entity comprised of people rather than tangible assets, remains problematical. The case of Pergamon AGB plc illustrates a case where UK accounting standards concerning goodwill lead to the generation of intangible assets. The reporting of brands as separable assets fails the accounting test of reasonable certainty. The accounting of brands puts values on balance sheets that are unrelated to costs, thus changing the purpose of current balance sheet accounting. Accountancy must come to terms with intangibles and divorce itself from the historical cost/profit oriented model to produce a framework that addresses the information needs of end-users.

SSAP II
Article Abstract:
Software Interactive Ltd's SSAP II is a full accounts production and cashbook software package that offers quick operations and is fairly user-friendly. The package is written in C language and is able to run on all computer systems, including the MS-DOS and the UNIX environments. Problems with the package include a lack of instruction on interfacing with printers and a shortage of help screens in the program. Overall, the package, which is available only by mail-order from the company, is an excellent value.
