Mr Arnault crashes the cocktail party
Article Abstract:
LVMH is proposing an alternative to the plans set out by Guinness and Grand Metropolitan for their proposed merger. LVMH's chairman, Bernard Arnault, proposes merging the wine and spirits businesses of the three companies and carrying out a stock flotation. The orginal plan does not do enough to tackle the key issue of lack of growth in sales for the liquor divisions of the two companies. LVMH argues that it can increase cost savings to help tackle this problem.

Head for the spirits
Article Abstract:
Mergers and acquisitions are likely to occur in the liquor industry following the merger of Guinness and Grand Metropolitan. This merger has led to a reassessment of strategies, according to Allied Domecq. Consolidation is a way to bring in a market that has matured, and the benefits include cost savings and synergies. A possible candidate for a merger with Allied Domecq is Seagram, though Allied is not commenting on its merger plans.
