Personal equity plans
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom personal equity plans (Peps) offer tax advantages of some 800 million pounds sterling for some 2.5 million investors. There is relief from capital gains tax and income tax. The government plans to replace Peps with individual savings accounts (ISAs) which will also have tax advantages, and it is unclear how these will affect holders of Peps. There are rumors of limits of between 75,000 pounds sterling and 100,000 pounds, which have yet to be confirmed. Investors should be cautious about Peps that have high exit charges until more is known about ISAs.

Tax curtain raiser
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom tax regulations are to be reviewed in proposals to be issued in Nov 1997. Capital gains tax (CGT) is especially likely to be affected, and there could be a change in the CGT rate. The exact changes are not easy to forecast, but investors can protect themselves by using personal equity plans (Peps). Peps can offer a shelter for 9,000 pounds sterling worth of stocks. Older investors should also consider inheritance tax, and leaving some assets to children as well as a spouse in order to reduce their tax bills.

Finding a way through a taxing maze
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government is likely to reform inheritance tax and capital gains tax. Details have been released of a new type of savings scheme with tax advantages, called the individual savings account (ISA). Small investors are still anxious about the government's plans to tax investment income. A number of experts have given their views on likely changes. Changes to capital gains tax may be politically appealing since the can be made to appear to be taxes only affecting the rich, though the changes may not be fair.
