Pharmaceuticals: on speed
Article Abstract:
Shares in pharmaceutical companies have performed well in the 15 months to May 1996. Companies are faced with less pressure to cut prices since US healthcare reform has not materialised, and managed care providers use drugs to reduce spending on hospitalization. Drugs companies are cutting costs, and have also carried out takeovers. Share prices may not perform as well from May 1996 as they did in the 15 months before. Earnings levels are likely to be average for the market, and cyclicals may be preferred to drigs shares.

Pharmaceuticals
Article Abstract:
The pharmaceutical industry is fragmented despite being a global industry, and there are a number of pressures pushing the industry toward consolidation. These include the costs of investment in research, and the increased costs of marketing in proportion to sales. Companies are also faced with patent expiries which can lead to a sharp drop in profits. Margins for the industry should improve if the right mergers are carried out.
