Pipelines in the Caspian
Article Abstract:
Petroleum pipelines in the Caspian Sea region include a planned Unocal and Delta pipeline linking Turkmenistan and Pakistan which would go through Afghanistan. Civil war in Afghanistan hampers the short-term development of this project. A pipeline from Turkmenistan through Iran to Turkey is possible, and the US appears to have softened its position on Iran. The Caspian Pipeline Consortium plans a link from Kazakhstan to the Russian Black Sea port of Novorissyk. Other plans include a link from Turkmenistan to the Turkish Mediterranean coast.

Shell seeks to avoid Nigeria U-turn
Article Abstract:
Shell faces protests over the company's investments in Nigeria. A consortium including Shell is about to sign a liquefied natural gas (LNG) contract in Nigeria. The company risks accusations of polluting land where the Ogoni people live. Nigeria accounted for 3% of Shell's earnings in 1994, so the group would not be greatly affected by an embargo on Nigerian petroleum, which in any case appears unlikely. The LNG project will have a 49% stake held by the Nigerian government, and a 24%stake held by Shell.

Oil companies: big savings for Shell
Article Abstract:
Shell Oil and Texaco are to merge downstream activities. Shell ranks first in the US petroleum refining market, together with Texaco. Duplication can be eliminated from distribution and a refinery or two may be closed, so cost savings will arise from this alliance. Shell is involved in other alliances in the US, such as a production and exploration alliance with Amoco. Downstream operations of large petroleum companies face pressure, though not these companies' operations as a whole.
