Well executed information systems planning can: improve communication between management, systems management, and users; provide an allocation basis for resources; help determine critical needs and priority projects; anticipate technological advances on the system; allow top management to monitor system progress; and coordinate data processing, communications, and office systems. The system will touch these areas: information management, applications, technology, organization, management practices and change control. Information systems planning provides critical information about performance and decision-making that are central to the organization's success.

More organizations are using information technology to become competitive in the European market. Both US and European firms are using information technology to obtain results such as shortened response time, mass personalization of products for each market, entry into the European market, and decreased costs of operation. Changes in the European market have caused many firms to respond as if the Single European Market were already a reality.
