Playing Footsie with indices
Article Abstract:
Stock market indices show changes in average share prices. The oldest such index in the UK is the FT Ordinary Share Index, set up in 1935 and measuring the average share price of the biggest 30 UK companies. The most famous UK index is the FT-SE 100 which uses a weighted arithmetic average related to capitalization of companies. The FT-SE-A All-Share index uses data from some 900 companies, while the FT-SE Mid 250 uses data on the 250 largest companies quoted on the stock exchange.

UK equities: taking profits
Article Abstract:
Bid speculation could help push the FT-SE 100 to 4,000, but there are also risks from a possible rise in interest rates and political factors, according to Legal and General. Some indicators such as dividend yields indicate possible overvaluing of shares. There may also be more new issues, which could depress UK share prices. A rise in the UK budget deficit could affect share prices, as could political factors, as the UK approaches an election.
