Port in a storm
Article Abstract:
The Japanese stock market has seen a drop in share prices since Jun 1996 and US share prices have also fallen. japan may still be able to remain stable if US share prices continue to drop. Foreign ownership of shares in Japan has risen but investors may not necessarily sell if US prices drop. This could occur if US share prices dropped so much that the US economy was affected and this in turn hit demand for imports from Japan, but otherwise foreign sales of Japanese shares are not likely to occur on a large scale, according to Alex Kinmont from Morgan Stanley.

Japan: no change
Article Abstract:
Japaese share prices dropped by nearly 4% following Oct 1996 elections which led to a strengthening of the position of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The LDP is likely to carry out a plan for 5 trillion yen of spending to ease the transition after a majpr boost to the economy from government spending in 1995. There is concern as to whether reform of Japanese taxes and regulations will be carried out to any great extent. Meanwhile, government bonds reacted favorably to the result of the election.
