Private interest grows as problems are ironed out

The UK government is trying to attract private investment for public works such as schools, roads and prisons. The aim is to reduce the amount borrowed by the government to build such facilities. The private sector is concerned with the risk levels involved and demands from the government for accountability. Risks are involved in raising capital and designing and building schemes. Some of the initial problems are being resolved and new opportunities are being offered to the private sector.

Ann Inverson has been appointed chief executive of Laura Ashley, a fashion and home furnishings retailer. The company has shown five year cumulative losses of 46.4 million pounds sterling and it has a cost base remaining close to its anual turnover, poor capital investment and a corporate culture dominated by Sir Bernard Ashley, its major shareholder and co-founder.
