Commerce Clearing Houses's (Chicago, IL) CCH IRS Interest and Penalties Calculator priced at $179 is comprehensive, provides detailed quarterly breakdowns for interest and penalty calculations, and has a built-in calculator. Time Value Software's (Irvine, CA) TaxInterest program priced at $149 has a comprehensive manual, has a good user-interface, and is comprehensive and bug-free. Denver Tax Software's (Denver, CO) IRS Interest and Penalty Calculator priced at $59 is a budget program that handles over- and underpayments, tax-motivated rates, and accuracy-related penalties, but lacks the ability to do state taxes.

Small firms can benefit by using new tax preparation software packages, such as Center Piece Software Inc's Laser Librarian. Using the software and a Hewlett-Packard-compatible laser printer, a firm can generate a wide variety of blank federal and state tax forms. The program costs $145 for just the federal forms, or $870 for all of the options on diskettes. Center Piece's Laser W2's payroll program costs $295 for the basic program. Users can integrate Center Piece's Laser W2's and Laser 1099's packages to improve the flow of information between the two packages.
