Promised land
Article Abstract:
Stock prices would be helped by lower bond yields in western economies in 1998, and this could occur if future low inflation is priced into bonds. A drop i inflation could also mean low earnings growth for US equities, though earnings could rise strongly in Europe due to a cyclical recovery. The United Kingdom market could perform well if government securities yields drop in anticipation of membership of European monetary union. There could still be problems if US interest rates are raised, while US earnings downgrades occur. Cash may initially be preferable in early 1998.

Keeping track of shopaholic companies
Article Abstract:
Companies are often tempted to issue shares to raise funds for acquisitions when markets are strong. Shares may be used for acquisitions instead of cash. Shareholders should assess a number of factors such as whether competition authorities could prevent the bid, or a higher offer could materialise. Rights issues give all shareholders access to the new shares, placings are geared to specific investors, and open offers are similar to rights issues but shareholders cannot sell on if they decide against accepting the offer.

Arab stock markets: on the map
Article Abstract:
ING Barings sees an increase in capital flows to Middle Eastern stock markets as likely since investors are becoming more aware of this region. Factors boosting interest from outside investors include privatizations, new issues and the reopening of the stock exchange in Beirut, Lebanon. Economic growth is likely to improve in this region in 1996 compared to 1995, argues ING Barings. Investment risk looks set to improve, as do corporate earnings.
