Proving it's just another business
Article Abstract:
British Island Airways (BIA) PLC Chmn Peter Villa asserts that cost consciousness, flexibility to respond to new situations, and thoughtful expansion of the core business can achieve profits for airlines. This is demonstrated by BIA's successful growth since its buyout in 1982, and its 1987 profit of almost two million pounds sterling. BIA is maintaining its core charter business, but will shortly commence its first scheduled service, to Sicily. BIA has also bid on five of the British Caledonia (BCal) scheduled routes divested because of requirements imposed on BCal's merger with British Airways. Villa feels the BCal routes are well tested and offer minimal risk. BIA is enlarging its fleet of eight BAC 1-11s with three McDonnell Douglas MD83s to address expansion needs.

Keeping ahead on traditional beers
Article Abstract:
Finance Director Hugh Roberts has helped Adnams & Co PLC maintain its position as a brewer of traditional draught beers despite changing legal and consumer trends. Adnams has reported yearly improvements in turnover despite: consumer preferences for lagers; industry trends toward brewing conglomerates; and questions regarding the future of brewery-owned public houses. A steady increase in dividends since 1983 reflects the company's confidence in its other ventures including take-home beers, high-quality wines, and soft drinks.
