Radicals without reins
Article Abstract:
Think tanks in the UK are notorious for putting forward controversial solutions to problems in the country. Although they have had a long history in the country, their influence did not reach its maturity until the 1970s during which the right-minded group Center for Policy Studies (CPS) became a formidable influence over the government of Margaret Thatcher. Owing to the radical propositions offered by these groups, the media is only too happy to accommodate the views of these think tanks. Currently, the country's think tanks are divided into two camps. The CPS, the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Adam Smith Institute belong to the right-wing group. All the rest stand on the left-wing camp. These think tanks are careful to express their independence from the political parties they claim to influence because identification with party politics could expose their tax status as charities. Observers agree that think tanks are on their way out in the UK.
