Railtrack calls the shots
Article Abstract:
Railtrack's stock price has risen following the announcement of an agreement on the Channel Tunnel railroad link between Railtrack, the United Kingdom government, and Bechtel, an engineering company and partner of Railtrack. The railroad link will be constructed in two phases and will be dealt with as a non-regulated asset. Railtrack had to persuade the government to agree to innovative financing for the project. Railtrack has warned that it may not carry out the second stage of the railroad link if regulatory changes to be made in 2001 are unacceptable.

ABB: profits flow
Article Abstract:
ABB has been awarded a contract valued at a minimum of $2.5 billion for its role in a hydroelectric project in Malaysia. The company leads a consortium which is constructing a dam. Work is scheduled to start in 1996 and electricity is to be produced from 2002. The aggregate value of the project is estimated at $5 billion. There are four main contractors involved. The industry has been affected by overcapacity but this appears to be easing. The company is not likely to have accepted a price that would affect profit margins.
