Relationships among information expenditure, economic performance, and size in local grain marketing cooperatives in the Upper Midwest
Article Abstract:
The performance of grain marketing cooperatives is analyzed based on four factors. Strategic decisions at the local level about elevator size, number of locations, grain handling facilities and information expenditures are examined to assess overall grain marketing performance. The effects of technological change, along with potential size economies in information acquisition and processing relative to elevator size decisions, are also explored.

Cooperative growth: is it constrained?
Article Abstract:
Long-run time series data for seven agricultural cooperatives in the US and Canada are tested to examine the relationship between cooperative growth and Gibrat's Law, which finds no association between farm size and growth. The law held for six of the seven cooperatives as cooperative growth rate approached a low value. Growth rate reduction is attributed to equity redemption.
