Relative absorptive capacity and interorganizational learning
Article Abstract:
The body of research on learning alliances has focused on how they should be organized and managed and has not sufficiently examined the selection of a learning partner with whom an alliance should be formed. To correct this imbalance, a model of interorganizational learning that relies on the theory of absorptive capacity introduced by Cohen and Levinthal (1989, 1990) was formulated and tested. This analysis hypothesized that the capacity of a firm to learn from another is mutually influenced by the relative qualities of the student firm and the teacher firm. The model was tested using data on R&D alliances between pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms. Findings revealed that interorganizational learning is positively related to the similarity of basic knowledge, lower management formalization, research centralization, compensation policies and research communities.
