Reluctant partners in the Westminster stand-off
Article Abstract:
UK's industries need the support of the government to be able to successfully compete in international markets. The relationship between the government and the business community has never been very close. This is partly because the government does not want to encourage companies to think of it as a prime source of subsidy and support. The creation of the Department of Trade and Industry's Industrial Competitiveness Division is expected to narrow the gap between industry and government. It provides a venue for the discussion of the pre-conditions vital to the creation of a strong national industrial base. More than a stable economy, British industry needs the government's express commitment to help it become more competitive. There are a number of areas where the government can help, including working for reduced energy costs and for the standarization of law enforcement all over the EC.

Don't wait until our backs are against the wall
Article Abstract:
Economic decline in Great Britain's industrial sector can be alleviated with the implementation of a national industrial partnership strategy between government and industry to be undertaken by the nation's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). Among the DTI's functions would be to encourage investments in the manufacturing industry through financial incentives, provide assistance to small business start-ups and exporting companies, provide greater financing for research and development, and improve cooperative efforts between industry and the academe. Japan's economy is one example of an industrial partnership. Another example is Daimler-Benz AG's management of the aerospace industry in cooperation with the German government.
