Retirement Planning for Small and Medium-Sized Employers
Article Abstract:
Retirement planning in the small and medium-sized businesses is more complicated than for large employers, due the variability in their characteristics and needs. Potential legislation mandating a government-sponsored or employer-sponsored program should be adequate motivation for these employers to consider the available pension plans. Registered pension plans, deferred profit sharing plans (DPSPs) and registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) are choices of employers, due to the tax- effective means of accumulating retirement income that they provide. A three-step plan, including design, implementation and communication, is the process taken in establishing a pension plan. Two types, defined- benefit and defined-contribution plans, are available. Generally, defined-contribution is more appropriate to a small business, cash flow, but it penalizes older employees. Pension reform in Canada has been a prime concern. This has led to some new choices for small employers. Tax implications of the three types of plans are outlined in a chart. Additional voluntary contributions can be permitted by employees under many circumstances. The 'flip-flop' technique is sometimes employed for this and is especially attractive to higher paid employees.
