Northern Venture Managers Ltd Exec Chmn Michael Denny manages 25 million pounds sterling in venture capital funds for Northern Venture Partnership Fund and Northern Investors. Denny served as chairman of the British Venture Capital Association (BCVA), and during his term he failed to persuade the government to support seed fund activities. Denny was successful in implementing guidelines for the venture capital industry so that valuations would be done on the same basis. Denny is supportive of the consolidation in the industry that happened during his term, since he felt that the growth in the industry, which expanded from 20 million pounds sterling in 1979 to 1.69 billion pounds in 1989, was too rapid.

He is currently President of Marsh & McLennan Companies, a huge financial services organization that employs about 24,000 people in 80 countries. Although his company's revenue last year totaled $2.7 billion, Smith is not very happy about the present state of the financial consulting business. The growth rate of the business is not as high as it used to be, and many companies have to struggle to be able to control expenses.
