Ring the changes
Article Abstract:
Pension plans can be bought by phone in the UK. Marks and Spencer was a pioneer in this field, starting with an execution-only service. Virgin and PensionStore have followed. Direct telephone-sold products can be cheaper since costs are lower, but this is not always the case, and some are as expensive as products sold in branches. There is also a limited selection of investment funds for this type of pension, though less advice is necessary since the range islimited.

A sense of relief
Article Abstract:
The UK state pension provides a low income, and people without a company pension, including the self-employed, need to save for their retirement. There have been criticisms of the pensions industry, but personal pensions have a number of advantages. Tax relief is available and personal pensions are portable so have advantages for people who change jobs frequently. Savers who may suffer periods of unemployment should assess the penalties for stopping contributions.
