The Malaysian economy has gone into a tailspin after enjoying prosperity for almost a decade. The Malaysian stockmarket has collapsed, wiping out a huge amount of corporate assets, and the country's currency, the ringgitt, has steeply depreciated. The Malaysian government is moving to impose discipline on the corporate sector, but consumer demand and investment are expected to be depressed in 1998.

Article Abstract:
The Malaysian economy enjoys two advantages over the troubled Thai economy that may prove decisive factors in whether it weathers the recent economic turmoil roiling the Asian markets: strong leadership and a lower level of foreign debt in the corporate sector. Most analysts believe that Malaysia will be able to weather the economic turndown with much less damage than will Thailand.
