Royal Doulton
Article Abstract:
Royal Doulton is a UK producer of porcelain which saw a rise in underlying sales for 1995. The pre-Christmas trade in the UK was weak and prices had to be marked down. Mainland Europe, the US and Canada also saw soft demand as consumers move toward more casual and less expensive tableware. The company will be able to cut costs through a new manufacturing facility starting up in Indonesia. The new plant is forecast to break even in 1998. The company's profit is forecast at some 17 million pounds sterling for 1996 by UBS.

Pot of gold
Article Abstract:
Portmeiron Potteries performed well in the US in 1st half 1997, but success due to a celebration event was followed by lower sales in the 2nd half. The company is affected by competition in the United Kingdom, and is too reliant on one pattern, Botanic Garden. A new complementary range has been given a good US trade response, and the company is seeking to develop a new range for mid-1999. The company's marketing is also low key, but it benefits from a strong brand and balance sheet.
