Rural Wales facing major challenges
Article Abstract:
Rural Wales faces a number of problems such as lack of transportation links, low wage levels and an ageing population. The UK Labor party argues that diversification is important, and the government also aims to encourage new businesses and activities outside agriculture. Telecommunications and information technology could help rural Wales and there is already a large number of telecottages in Wales. Transportation links such as rail and bus lines are also important in Wales.

Wales: economy is strong and still expanding
Article Abstract:
Wales has seen a rise in manufacturing employment of 15% in the ten years to 1996. Some parts of the industrial south are still affected by high unemployment levels since jobs have been lost from coal mining and heavy industry. The Welsh Office is one of the bodies seeking to tackle this problem. Foreign direct investment has helped create jobs. Automobile parts and electronics have become important sectors in Wales. Real estate enquiries reflect the recovery of the region.

Urban areas cashing in on spare time

The Welsh leisure industry benefits from coastline and open spaces and recreational elements tend to be included in designs for busines parks and retail parks. South Wales accounts for most of the leisure developments. Cardiff Bay is one location for developments and Tarmac Richardson's Atlantic Wharf is a flagship project in Cardiff. Theme parks have not become popular in the region but there is a proposal for a park close to Pontypridd.
