UK charities have been affected by the collapse of Barings plc which has hit charities that invested with Barings and has made charities warier of using fund managers. Charities are calling for a scheme to protect their investments in the event of another such collapse. Meanwhile, the Charity Commission has published draft regulations covering accounting practices of charities which are due to come into force in 1996. Income from charity shops is rising, while income from legacies dropped by 3% in real terms in 1994.

The UK National Lottery Charities Board was set up in 1994, and made grants worth 160 million pounds sterling in its initial round. There were eight applications for each successful award, with 2,460 organizations benefiting. The first round involved 15,000 applications, and the second round involves some 12,000. There are fewer applications but many will be unsuccessful. The second round focuses on youth, and the third round focuses on care, disability and health.

The National Trust is a UK organization which aims to protect art collections, country houses and the countryside. The organization was founded in 1895 and its real estate assets cannot be sold. Legacies and investment account for some 33% of the organization's income, and trading is also a major source of revenue. The National Trust aims to protect coast lines through Enterprise Neptune, and has set up an educational project called Minerva.
