Article Abstract:

Customer care is crucial for the success of hotels, so training and recruitment are important areas. The hospitality industry accounts for a tenth of the workforce of the UK. The Hotel and Catering International Management Association aims to maintain standards in the industry and improve the professionalism of those who work in it. There is a need for more government funding for education programs that benefit the industry. Companies that focus on training and recruitment are more likely to be successful than those which do not.

Companies in the United Kingdom breweries and hotels sector have attracted a number of bid offers. Ushers of Trowbridge, Thistle Hotels and Vaux are among companies attracting bids. Real estate investment trusts (REITs) from the US are likely to invest in UK hotels since they appear cheaper than US hotel companies. A number of REITs sought to acquire Savoy Hotel which agreed to a bid from Blackstone Hotel Acquisitions Company, a REIT. Stakis, a casino and hotels operator, may also make a bid for Thistle Hotels.

The United Kingdom hotel industry has seen a strong rise in profit in 1997, though investors are concerned that it is reaching a peak in the business cycle. There is also concern about the impact of a strong pound sterling on demand from abroad. Conditions are different in London, where foreign tourism is more important, from in the rest of the UK, where demand growth is likely to be modest but steady. London benefits from being a fashionable tourist center and this helps offset the impact of pound sterling.
