The great dividend yield mystery
Article Abstract:
Low dividend yields can mean low returns on stocks, according to the Bank of England, building on work carried out by Robert J. Shiller. Very low levels of dividend tend to be followed by low returns, and the opposite happens with very high levels, though more average levels forecast little. This applies to the UK, US, Japan and also to some extent to Germany. Investors are affected by fashion and they can buy shares for reasons of fashion, leading to a drop in yields.

The dangers in low dividend yields
Article Abstract:
Stock dividend yields have dropped and this has been explained by stock buybacks. There is still concern that stock prices could be too high, measured by the price-earnings ratio. There have been three periods when dividend yields were an indicator of stock prices, and this may not be enough to use yields for forecasting. Higher investment levels boost productivity, and there is a disagreement among analysts as to whether investment involves diminishing returns.
