Shares for sale: one careful owner
Article Abstract:
Investors seeking to buy new company stocks in the United Kingdom may find that they have been excluded and that only institutional investors can buy the stocks. If private investors are able to take part in a new issue, they should asses the extent to which the company fits into their existing stock portfolio. They should also compare the performance of the company with similar companies in the sector. Large stakes may be available to private investors because institutional investors are not interested. Investors should also not assume that stock prices will rise after an issue.

Cash hopes
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stock prices are likely to continue to rise in 1998 due to the large amounts of cash held by fund managers, according to Credit Suisse First Boston. There are limited options for fund managers, so some of their cash will have to be invested in equities at a time when stock buybacks and takeovers are occurring. There is still a risk to stock prices from disappointing earnings growth, and from a hard landing should the Bank of England decide to raise interest rates.
