Article Abstract:
UK investors seeking income can choose from a wide range of products such as annuities, which involve loss of capital, and savings accounts which are dependent on interest rates which determine the income. Government securities and guaranteed income bonds are other products providing an income, and home income schemes use mortgages to provide an annuity and the mortgage is paid for using the annuity. There are also single premium schemes from insurers such as distribution bonds, and National Savings offers bonds with higher rates for pensioners.

Smaller companies roller coaster fun: investing in smaller companies can be rewarding but private investors must watch out for the pitfalls
Article Abstract:
Private investors should consider other possibilities for their portfolios than indexed funds, such as UK smaller companies. However there are problems acquiring good quality information and transaction costs are high, therefore a collective investment produdct such as a unit trust or an investment trust which specialise in the area should be considered. Timing can also be a problem and it is practically impossible to trade in and out of smaller company shares at will.
