Stakeholder management: opportunities and challenges
Article Abstract:
Stakeholder management (SM), the management of a corporation for the sake of all interested parties rather than just for the shareholders, is becoming more popular. Other parties that have a stake in a corporation include employees, customers, creditors, the communities the corporation is located in, suppliers, and regulators. Managerial capitalism has drawbacks in that it encourages the implementation of short-term strategies to maximize profits. The advantages of SM include eliminating conflicting interests among stakeholders, reducing the pressure of management to produce short-term results, reducing the costs associated with a high turnover among stakeholders, and providing the firm with committed stakeholders in an environment characterized by increasing competition.

Managing a closed system in an open systems world
Article Abstract:
Because of the influence of environmental factors on a business, such as customers, government regulations and local communities, a business should be thought of as an open system. However, many managers overlook these factors and run their businesses as closed systems, which results in a gradual loss of effectiveness. Common reasons for overlooking the external environment are preoccupation with internal operations, failure to properly monitor changes in the external environment, refusal to discard old preconceptions in the face of new evidence, complacency brought on by past successes, preoccupation with short-term results, and lack of introspection.
