State of the supermarket industry '98
Article Abstract:
The Washington, DC-based Food Marketing Institute's 1998 Food Marketing Industry Report has found that the status of the supermarket industry appears to have changed little on the surface. Industry sales grew only 3.2% in 1997, or an inflation adjusted 0.7% , profits remained strong at more than 1.08% and inflation remained minimal at more than 2.5%. Other findings suggest, however, that the supermarket business is about to experience a growth surge, fueled possibly by the prepared foods segment.

Supermarkets relying less on new store development to increase sales
Article Abstract:
Supermarkets are becoming less dependent on store development to boost sales, according to a survey conducted by the Food Marketing Institute. The rate of store openings fell to a five-year low of 3.7% in 1997 partly because of market saturation, the high cost of store construction and the relatively slow payback. Typical new store size, however, has increased to a median of 52,441 sq ft in 1997 from 40,288 sq ft in 1990.
