State passage of interstate banking legislation: an analysis of firm, legislative, and economic characteristics
Article Abstract:
The effects of interstate legislation such as the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act of 1994 on the banking industry are analyzed using a sample of 271 banks. Deregulation of the industry is viewed as a positive development by investors but is not expected to be of any financial benefit for money center banks. Results also confirm past conclusions of Black et al. (1990), Goldberg et al. (1992) and Billingsley and Lamy (1992) which state that increased takeover activity in target banks can lead to higher returns in terms of stock response.

The consumer n the continent had, in exchange for a more rational and integrated financial system, to pay more for financial services.
