Strategy, budgeting, and crisis in Latin America
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to examine the relationship between business strategy and budgetary processes under the crisis conditions. Latin America was chosen as the setting for this research because of the constant and high-level environmental turbulence faced by businesses, as well as the region's increasing trade importance. It was hypothesized that an organization's perceptions of the threat posed by environmental uncertainties will determine the market strategy it will adopt. To examine such strategy, the study used Miles and Snow's (1978) business strategy typology which characterizes firms as being Defenders, Analyzers, Prospectors or Reactors. The findings supported the hypothesis that Crisis would be positively related to the Defender and Reactor strategies, and negatively related to the Prospector and Reactor strategies.
