Strong oil price merits a closer look
Article Abstract:
A rise in petroleum prices could make exploration and production stocks appear attractive, but some brokers may be overoptimistic about the impact of the price rise on stocks. Generally, smaller companies are seen as more affected by price changes, yet larger companies have tended to perform better in terms of their stock prices. Past problems may deter some investors from investing in smaller oil firms. Lack of investment in production since the price rise will help to maintain prices.

Article Abstract:
Edinburgh Oil and Gas has been affected by a drop in petroleum prices and the company has focused on the gas business to avoid vulnerability to petroleum prices. The company should benefit from a gas storage agreement with Scottish Power which will be operational from fall 1999. The company is also involved in exploiting gas from former coal mines. Production at the company's petroleum fields has not been maximised due to the drop in petroleum prices.
