Struggling to stay afloat
Article Abstract:
The UK market for new issues has seen a reduction in issue prices in summer 1996. Companies affected include Somerfield and Therapeutic Antibodies. There is still demand for new issues but investors have become more selective. Uno, a furniture retailer, saw its shares opening at a premium to their price on placing. Some companies are delaying their share issues . Institutions are able to reduce flotation prices, and small investors can buy shares at less expensive prices.

Dividend harvest
Article Abstract:
Dividend payments are commonly made as interim results are issued in fall every year. Not all companies pay dividends, and some may cease to pay dividends for a while, but dividends make investments appear real. Investors like to see stock prices rise, but it is an illusion that investors are richer if the stock price subsequently falls and the investor has not benefited. Dividends, however, are given to investors and are not taken away again.
