Students and concepts
Article Abstract:
Lorraine Wild, Ken Krayer, David Sterling and Bill Drenttel chose among the various entries in the 44th Annual Design Review's Students and Concepts categories. They were unimpressed and were frustrated at the opacity of function and the heavy-handedness of the metaphors used in the designs of products ranging from global positioning systems to digital datebooks. They settled for the projects with a conscientious nature. The winners in these categories are presented.

Serious fun: the business of toys
Article Abstract:
Mattel, the largest toy company in the world, is developing interactive toys such as My Interactive Pooh. Interactive toys transform the previously inanimate toy into a child's companion which can ask questions, say the child's name, sing, dance and react to the child's actions. Mattel belongs to a group of toy companies which are coming up with toys equipped with computers which allow them to interact with the children.

Running with scissors
Article Abstract:
The product designers in Wok Media, the London-based design practice, design unusual pieces like the Flood lamp and the white fan, Blow, which evoke a feeling of a design adventure.
