Studying the market
Article Abstract:
Stockbrokers in the United Kingdom offer different types of services, and they range from execution only, where decisions are taken by clients, to discretionary portfolio management, where stockbrokers take the decisions. Investors with a good knowledge of the market, or only wishing to deal in a few stocks, may benefit from execution only services, which can be carried out by post, or by using the telephone, as well as through the internet. Discretionary portfolio services benefit investors with little time and lacking knowledge to manage a stock portfolio.

Acquiring minds
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom stockbrokers have been affected by acquisitions and mergers due to an increased emphasis on size. The government is seeking to foster retirement saving with the aim of lessening dependence on state pensions. The increased pace of automation has also affected stockbrokers. New arrivals are increasing pressure from competition and this especially applies to US companies entering the UK market. More US on-line stockbrokers look set to enter the UK market in 1999 and 2000.
