Talking sense
Article Abstract:
The concept of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) is growing popular in the UK as a means of settling industrial disputes. This approach is seen as a better alternative to the more costly and time-consuming commercial litigation. ADR also has several advantages over formal arbitration, which some consider as a 'court by another name' since it can be as expensive and as slow as legal proceedings. This method involves the disputing parties and a third-party mediator. The process begins with each of the two parties presenting their case and then retreating to different rooms. The mediator moves back and forth from one room to the other to establish points of agreement between the two groups. UK companies interested in ADR can seek help from the Centre for Dispute Resolution in London, which was established in 1990 to encourage the adoption of the method.

Peter Shakeshaft of Drambuie Group
Article Abstract:
The Drambuie Group is the subsidiary of the Edinburgh, Scotland-based manufacturer of Drambuie liqueur, a firm that is privately owned by the McKinnon family. The Drambuie Group was established for the purpose of diversifying the firm into other high-value brands. The firm acquired Caithness Glass and intends to acquire other companies manufacturing high-quality products. CEO Peter Shakeshaft, a chartered accountant, will manage the new firm, but not the affairs of the liqueur manufacturer. The holding company will remain wholly owned by the McKinnon family, but the Group was established as a separate subsidiary to allow for outside financing. Shakeshaft states that the Group will use Drambuie's expertise in marketing, exporting, and finance to build a Scottish brands business, but it will not seek to interfere with the management of acquired firms.

Starting an open relationship
Article Abstract:
The conversion of Shanks & McEwan Group (SMG) PLC to a new Unix-based information system involved the joint utilization of in-house know-how and outside expertise. The switch to a Unix system was necessitated bythe obsolescence of SMG's original mainframe system. It was realized that it did not have the capacity to handle the large volume of users and transactions of one of UK's biggest waste management company. Oracle Corporation Ltd was then chosen to provide the database system and financial applications, as was Sun Micros for the client-server system. At the same time, in-house experts were tasked to develop bolt-on applications fashioned to SME's activities. The coordination of outside and internal knowledge and skills resulted to a greaterability to address individual needs and resources.
