Inward investment
Article Abstract:
Institutional investors in the United Kingdom tend not to be interested in smaller firms outside the FTSE 250 index, but Birmingham, England, benefits from venture capital companies that are well represented in the region. Deal flow could be affected by economic uncertainty in 1999, and problems could arise from a possible blocked exit pipeline. Trade sales may have to be considered by some companies due to stock market uncertainties even if a deal slowdown is only temporary.

Tax-efficient funds for adventurous investors: Venture-capital trusts offer attractive tax breaks to investors prepared to tie up their money for five years in unquoted companies
Article Abstract:
It is too early to say whether the venture-capital trust (VCT) sector is producing good returns, although some VCTs have been investing for a few years. VCT experts are confident of good returns in time, although they remain a niche product for a specific sort of investor. VCTs invest in higher risk companies, but the risks are not as high as many investors believe. 11 VCTs are aiming to raise up to 215 million pounds sterling.
