Tax expert systems begin to be feasible in accounting offices
Article Abstract:
Computer expert systems are taking on an increasingly significant role in the tax profession, particularly for tax consultants. Extant expert systems have become successful substitutes for accomplishing forms and paper checklists. Such expert systems may equal or even surpass tax accountants in the ability to resolve problems in taxation in the future. The value of expert systems lies in its ability to iron-out contradictions and disputes in information related to tax issues. Development of the system depends to a large extent on the use of expert system shells. These shells provide for easy usage of spreadsheets and can assist in enhancing an accounting firm's tax technology. The VP-Expert shell facilitates the ease of expert system use. Hypertext is a shell program built with an explanation facility.

Electronic storage can supplement or replace filing paper
Article Abstract:
Electronic document storage systems can reduce the risk of loss of information and help tax practitioners enhance their ability to serve their clients. Also known as document archiving and retrieval, computerized storage technology involves both hardware and software components. Such components include floppy disks, which allows and calls for careful indexing and backup of data disks; software for text archiving and retrieval, which allows for the assembly, manipulation, and searching over a text database; write-once, read-many compact disks (CD-WORM), which offers optical technology for long-term data storage; and scanners, which translate printed documents into text files that can be edited through a word processor.
